What is Hospice?

Hospice is a philosophy of care. That care is provided to people with life-limiting illnesses, in their own homes, where they can be in familiar surroundings and close to their loved ones. The focus of care at this time shifts from curative care (curing the disease) to palliative care (to provide more comfort and quality). Important and difficult decisions need to be made about issues that most people know very little about. Families find that they are physically unable or do not know how to care for their loved one. Your physician or hospital may recommend hospice care to assist you at this time, or patients and families may call hospice on their own.
